About IELTS :
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a tool to measure candidates English language abilities in four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. This test prepares students who want to study in foreign universities in UK/USA/Canada, NZ/etc: IELTS provides a profile of candidate ability to use English in all four modules.
Description of the IELTS Test:
There are two versions of the IELTS test:
Academic Modules: For students seeking entry to a University or institution of higher education offering degree and diploma course
General training Modules: For students seeking entry as a work visa or on immigration
Test Format
All candidates are tested in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules.
There is a choice of Reading and Writing Modules, where a candidate can either opt for Academic or General Training Module.
The first three Modules- Listening, Reading and Writing- must be completed in one day. The Speaking Module may be taken,
at the discretion of the test centre, generally next day at different centre. Information on the test of the four modules
as given below:
Listening : 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes + Transfer time
Academic Reading
OR
General Training Reading
3 Sections 40 questions,
3 Sections 40 questions,
60 minutes
60 minutes
Academic Writing
OR
General Training Writing
2 tasks, 60 minutes
2 tasks, 60 minutes
Speaking: 11 to 14 minutes
Total test time: 2 hours 45 minutes
How long the test score remains valid:
2 years from the date of examination
What is the pass mark?
There is no fixed pass mark in IELTS. Candidate get overall bands score in four modules with the highest 9.0 and the lowest 1.0 .Generally universities would require 6.5 as overall bands core for post graduate studies and 6.0 for under graduate studies.
IELSTS and USA universities:
There are more than 2500 USA universities and institutions who are accepting IELTS score in lieu of TOEFL.
